Many of the rifles are old and worn out by now. There was talk that they would be replaced by the H&K G36 but budget costs made the older M16 rifles a more viable option.

Actually, a good number of the M16A1s in use by the Philippine military now are ones made locally under license from Colt. Same goes for the M16A1 carbines and some M4s (recently acquired license) in service.
