When the Germans encountered the Soviet SVT-40, they were surprised but also impressed by the design. Their early attempt at semi-automatic rifle, the G41, was a complete failure. The G43 addressed the problems with a much more reliable gas system. You can actually see how crude and rough the machine work was on these late year models as resources and conditions in Germany deteriorated.
One of my favorite WWII rifles and one I hope to buy someday.
