Trenched Russian soldiers waiting in a muddy trench during the German offensive in 1941. The weapon in the photo is the DP-28, a odd but reliable light machine gun chambered in 7.62x54mmR. It has a very distinct top fed drum mag, sometimes nicknamed the “pancake”. Although it was capable of operating in dirty, dusty or muddy environments, the magazine only held 47 rounds and was cumbersome to reload. A few years ago there were civilian versions in semi-auto available on the U.S market from a couple of companies but I think the supply of kits has dried up.
