War is Hell This odd photo has a gruesome back story which some people don’t believe to the point it’s considered a hoax or propaganda image from the Winter War between Russia and Finland. The image depicts two Finnish soldiers displaying the skins of Soviet soldiers near Maaselkä. Apparently the small patrol of Soviets had run out of supplies and began to cannibalize each other until the Finns managed to capture the remaining survivors. Cannibalism was not uncommon in World War II. The Japanese were known to commit it later in the war, eating POW’s when their supply lines were being destroyed. German sniper Josef “Sepp” Alleberger also documents Soviet cannibalism in his book “”Sniper on the Eastern Front”.
