Russians celebrating the day Nazi Germany was defeated. May 9th is considered a major holiday in many former Com-Bloc nations, although Great Britain and Israel also recognize and observe the holiday in their own way. Sadly the inevitable fact that many of the surviving World War II veterans who are honored on this day won’t be around for much longer.
Defeat… Soviet soldiers standing together as they present the military banners of the defeated Nazis. Note the first soldier and the lack of the banner. That one belongs to the infamous 1st SS Division Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler. The banner was never found or captured; whereabouts are unknown or possibly it was destroyed during the battle for Berlin. There are some theories that it was saved and preserved by the post-war Nazi insurgency group/plan known as Werwolf; German for Werewolf.

Desert Fox Legendary German General (Field Marshal) Erwin Rommel, has a drink with a fellow officer while in Africa. Even after his defeat he was still feared and respected by the Allies. The British had plotted to assassinate or capture Rommel several times. The late U.S General Norman Schwarzkopf kept a copy of Rommel’s book, “Infantry Attack” during his command of Operation Desert Storm.
Red Army Rifles The semi-auto SVT-40 and the bolt-action Mosin Nagant 91/30. Both rifles are chambered in 7.62x54R, a cartridge that is still in use with the Russian military, in spite being over 120+ years old. The SVT-40 was an unsuccessful attempt to replace the Mosin but proved to be too complicated for the mostly illiterate peasant soldiers. The Finns and Germans however found the rifle to be effective and used it against the Soviets whenever a captured example could be had (if there was enough ammo for it anyway).
StG-44 Yahoo News, which is largely anti-gun, did an article a couple weeks ago about an StG-44. Apparently a woman in Connecticut went to trade her father’s old gun in for a Wal-Mart gift card and it turned out to be an original WWII StG-44 bringback. The police officers on duty for the buyback immediately knew what it was and told the woman what it was worth (she had no idea). Rather than destroy the gun, the police department allowed the woman to keep it to sell off for it’s full value.
German Flakvierling 38 A 20mm anti-aircraft gun setup in a quad format. Four of these guns grouped together was more than enough to bring down low flying enemy aircraft but it had a major downside. Each of the guns is fed by a 20 round magazine and it would require constant reloading in order to be effective. Note the soldier in the middle holding onto the magazine in preparation for a swap.
